Edo State to Launch Indigenous Airline, Boost Regional Air Travel and Jobs
The disclosure was made on Thursday when Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja.
According to the governor, the proposed Edo airline is a strategic project designed to support the state’s economic revival and reposition Benin City as a major aviation and commercial hub in southern Nigeria.
“If I have my way, I want this airline to take off immediately. Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy and attract investors,” Governor Okpebholo said.
Edo Airline to Operate from Benin Airport
The airline is expected to operate from Benin Airport, leveraging its historical role as a key aviation hub during the era of the defunct Okada Air. Governor Okpebholo noted that reviving the airport’s prominence would stimulate trade, tourism, and business activities within the state.
To ensure commercial viability, the Edo State Government is exploring partnerships with local and foreign investors. The governor revealed that South African investors have expressed interest in the project, pledging to provide aircraft and technical support.
Federal Government supports Edo Airline Project
Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, welcomed the initiative and described it as timely, noting that Benin Airport has the infrastructure and potential to regain its status as a major aviation hub.
“Benin Airport has the capacity to become commercially competitive again. Investor interest confirms the airport’s viability,” Keyamo said.
To fast-track the project, the Federal Ministry of Aviation has constituted a technical committee to oversee operational planning, regulatory compliance, and coordination between Edo State, investors, and aviation authorities. The committee is expected to submit weekly progress reports.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
Beyond improving air travel, the proposed Edo airline is projected to generate jobs, create opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses, and boost tourism and trade within the state.
Governor Okpebholo added that the project aligns with Edo State’s broader economic development agenda and demonstrates growing investor confidence in the state’s aviation and business environment.
If implementation proceeds as planned, Benin Airport could become fully operational within the first half of the year, positioning Edo State as a key player in Nigeria’s regional aviation sector.
